The Role of DHT in Hair Loss for Both Men & Women

What is DHT?

A specific enzyme called alpha-5 reductase converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. After this conversion, DHT is five times more potent than testosterone alone. Testosterone is produced in the testes and prostate in men and small amounts are produced by the ovaries in women. If testosterone levels increase, so does the DHT hormone. DHT is primarily used by the body in the prostate, skin and hair follicles. However, DHT causes hair follicles to shrink and over time by a lack of nourishment until hair starts to grow more slowly and eventually cannot complete a full hair growth cycle.

The DHT hormone is primarily responsible for patterned hair loss in males. The most typically affected hair regions include the temples, hairline, and the vertex of the scalp. The rim of hair around the back of the scalp contains hormone-resistant hair follicles that aren’t as sensitive to DHT.

In the past, most scientists thought men were the only ones experiencing hair loss from DHT. However, it’s been found that trace amounts of testosterone found in women is also being converted to DHT and is triggering hair loss. This hormone-induced hair loss affects women a little differently, creating more of a “Christmas tree” type of hair loss on the top of the temple.

Genes and DHT

Hair loss from DHT mostly depends on your genetics and how sensitive your hair follicles are to the DHT hormone. If you hair follicle receptors are sensitive, they are triggered more easily by some of the smallest traces of DHT, resulting in more hair loss.

How Revivogen scalp therapy can reduce DHT

Revivogen blocks the androgen receptors, a type nuclear receptor that is activated by binding either of the androgenic hormones, testosterone, or dihydrotestosterone, and prevents testosterone from entering the cell. When DHT production is reduced, hair thinning and shedding genes become dormant and the follicles begin producing healthy, normal hair once again. For even more dramatic results, Revivogen also contains natural ingredients that have been proven to stimulate the hair follicles and activate their growth phase.
